Enter the French VAT number (format FR + 2 characters + 9-digit SIREN, e.g. FR40303265045) into VATport. We check it against the EU VIES database operated by the European Commission and return the registration status in real time.
France participates in VIES but company names and addresses are only returned when the business has opted in to sharing that data. Many French companies have not opted in, so VIES returns a valid status with no name — this is normal and does not indicate a problem.
The French VAT number (numéro de TVA intracommunautaire) is derived from the SIREN: it is FR + a two-character check key + the 9-digit SIREN. The SIRET is an extension of the SIREN that identifies a specific establishment (SIREN + 5-digit NIC). VATport validates the VAT number via VIES — SIREN/SIRET lookups are not currently supported.
The standard VAT rate in France is 20%. Reduced rates of 10% (restaurants, transport, some cultural services) and 5.5% (food, books, energy) apply to certain goods and services. A super-reduced rate of 2.1% applies to a limited category of items such as certain medicines and some press publications.
