Enter the Dutch VAT number (format NL + 9 digits + B + 2 digits, e.g. NL004495445B01) into VATport. We check it against the EU VIES database and return the registration status in real time.
The Netherlands participates in VIES but name and address disclosure is opt-in. Many Dutch businesses have not opted in, so VIES returns a valid status without company details. This is normal and does not affect the validity of the number.
Before 2020, sole traders (eenmanszaken) in the Netherlands had VAT numbers derived from their citizen service number (BSN), which raised privacy concerns. In 2020 the Dutch tax authority (Belastingdienst) issued new pseudonymised VAT numbers to all sole traders to protect their personal data. If you have an old NL VAT number for a sole trader, it may have changed.
The standard VAT rate in the Netherlands is 21%. A reduced rate of 9% applies to food, medicines, books, and certain services such as hairdressing and repairs. Some goods and services are zero-rated, including exports outside the EU.
